83% of Unite BA cabin crew back strikes
29.03.11
Unite union members of British Airways cabin crew have voted to back strike action again. An overwhelming 83% of the 6,981 Unite members who returned a valid paper in the fourth ballot to be held in just over two years said yes to industrial action. Some 10,000 were sent voting papers.
In a statement Unite said the vote reflected the ‘continued resilience’ of BA staff. General secretary Len McCluskey said: ‘This vote shows that cabin crew remain determined to win justice. We urge BA's boardroom to see this as a clear message that they must think again about how to regain the trust and confidence of a significant part of their cabin crew operation. We continue to be in discussions with the company to find a solution to this long-running dispute.’
BA said in a statement: ‘This is a time for co-operation, not confrontation. We began talks with Unite earlier this month, and those talks are continuing. We hope they will bring an end to this dispute, which is what the overwhelming majority of our cabin crew want.’
Unite has yet to announce strike dates, and must give at least seven days notice to the airline of any planned action. It has previously indicated that it will not strike over Easter or the Royal Wedding Weekend. BA has said that it would operate 100% of its flights from London City and Gatwick, 100% of long haul flights and flights on all of its short haul routes (but not all flights) in the event of strike action.
