Mixed results for BAA at Heathrow and Stansted
28.04.11
Passenger traffic at Heathrow grew by 2.5% to 15 million in the first quarter of 2011, whilst the number of passengers using Stansted fell by 6.6% to 3.9 million. However, revenues at UK airports operator BAA increased by 5.6% compared with the same period in 2010, rising from £456.1 million to £481.5 million.
Overall passenger traffic at BAA's six UK airports grew by 0.6%, from 18.6 million in the first quarter last year to 18.7 million in the first quarter of 2011. Net retail income per passenger grew from £5.15 in 2010 to £5.51 in 2011, an increase of 7%.
The company also announced that it had revised projected passengers at Heathrow. Although it still believes passenger traffic will continue to grow at Heathrow over the coming years, ‘it will do so at a more modest pace than previously assumed’. The divergence between actual growth and forecasts is due to airlines' ‘slower shift to large aircraft and a stronger focus on more spacious premium cabins than volume growth in economy class.’
