London freight moving from Gatwick and Stansted to Heathrow
27.09.08
Cargo passing through London airports is undergoing a major restructuring as BAA prepare to sell one of London's three major airports, Traffic World reports. It says freight movement through the city is shifting, with dramatically more cargo heading through Heathrow.
Freight traffic at Gatwick has fallen by nearly half since May, including a decline of 42.3% in August. Stansted, a home to several all-cargo operations, saw its cargo tonnage drop 13% in August and the airport's freight is off by almost a quarter over the last four years.
At the same time, freight shippers are sending goods through Heathrow in sharply increasing numbers. Heathrow's cargo traffic was up 10.5% in the first eight months of 2008, with August tonnage up 9.8% over the same month a year ago. Heathrow handled about 75% of London-area traffic four years ago but that share is up to about 84% this year.
