Heathrow flights amongst the best value in Europe

Flights from Heathrow are amongst the best value for money in Europe, according to online shopping comparison website Kelkoo's Best Value Flight Index. The index examined the average cost per kilometre of Europe's 125 most popular flight routes to identify the best value flights.
Bangkok claimed the top two positions in the index, with flights originating in Frankfurt having an average cost of 3.3 cents per km (c/km) and Heathrow costing 3.4 c/km. The report found that at an average cost of 8.2 c/km, long haul flights represented the best value for money for European travellers, taking nine out of the top ten spots in the index.
European short haul flights are 140 percent more expensive than long haul flights on average, at 19.6 c/km. However, some short haul trips, worked out cheaper than the average long haul route and Heathrow featured twice in the top five best value short haul flights. Paris-Orly Airport to Lisbon topped the list with an average cost of 5.2 c/km, while Heathrow to Athens and Heathrow to Lisbon took second and fifth place with an average cost of 5.9 c/km and 6 c/km respectively.
Whilst Heathrow had some of the best value flights on the index, some of the most expensive long haul routes also originate at the hub. Flights from Heathrow to Houston and New York came in second and third from bottom of the best value long haul routes list at 12.9 c/km 12.6 c/km. Doha was the most expensive long-haul destination from Europe, with flights from Heathrow costing 14.5 c/km.
The report, commissioned by Kelkoo and produced by flight analysts RDC Aviation, compared 125 of the most popular air routes across Europe over a twelve month period. All airfares were collected for an economy passenger and exclude government taxes which can have a significant effect on the cost of the flights as not all countries apply the same levy.
