Heathrow and Gatwick not hit by refinery insolvency
25.01.12
Heathrow and Gatwick airports have said they do not expect to be affected by the parent company of a fuel supplier's plans to file for insolvency, Dow Jones reports. The Coryton refinery, which is owned by Switzerland-based Petroplus Holdings, supplies 20% of the fuel needs for southeast England. Petroplus announced yesterday it plans to file for insolvency, and shipments of refined products were halted.
A spokeswoman for Heathrow Airport told the news service that the Coryton refinery is one of a number of underground suppliers it uses, but as demand for fuel is traditionally lower during the winter season, it has no concerns about fuel levels depleting. It also has an overland supplier that delivers fuel by tankers. The airport revised its fuel supply strategy after the Buncefield oil terminal fire in 2005 to ensure it has more than one fuel supplier.
A spokeswoman for Gatwick Airport said it would not be affected because its fuel is supplied solely by Buncefield.
