More fog delays for Christmas travellers
23.12.07
Thousands of passengers faced delays to their Christmas getaway for a second day running, after fog saw nearly 140 flights from Heathrow, Gatwick and London City Airports to be cancelled. 86 outbound flights from Heathrow, 21 from Gatwick, and 30 from London City Airport have been grounded so far today. Airlines said customers were being offered alternative flights or refunds.
Of the flights cancelled at Heathrow, most are short-haul flights from Terminal 1, Terminal 2 or Terminal 4, with destinations including Edinburgh, Dublin, Milan and Rome. At Gatwick the cancelled flights included BA and easyJet services bound for Amsterdam, Manchester, Newquay and Jersey.
A spokeswoman at London City Airport said its cancellations included flights by Swissair, BA and Air France. Visibility is not improving, and she said passengers due to take flights on Monday should check with their airlines in the morning.
Dozens of inbound journeys to the UK have also been affected by the weather, with some flights cancelled and others diverted to alternative airports, including some Gatwick flights going to Birmingham, with passengers then put on a bus to the London airport.
Stansted and Southampton airports - hit by fog on Friday - both said they were operating a normal service today.
