3500 to help BA break strike
21.02.10
Up to 3,500 British Airways staff - including 1,000 pilots - have volunteered to work as stewards and cabin crew to help break a widely expected strike by the airline's cabin crew, the Daily Mail reports. They would work with cabin crew who do not strike, including some who will return to the airline on a temporary basis having left last year.
With so many staff willing to help, it is likely that the airline will be able to run a limited service if the 12,000 cabin crew back a union call to walk out. A 'union source' told the newspaper: 'BA are obviously not going to be able to run a normal operation, but with so many volunteers they could run more than just a skeleton service.'
The result of the strike ballot will be formally announced tomorrow and the Unite union and BA management expect a vote in favour of industrial action. Cabin crew are striking over jobs, pay and working conditions.
