Unite lose BA high court challenge
19.02.10
The Unite union, which represents British Airways cabin crew, lost their High Court bid to stop the airline imposing cost-cutting measures. The High Court ruled in favour of BA today in its latest clash with the union.
Unite challenged the airline's cost-cutting measures, which included reducing crew numbers in cabin, saying this contravened staff employment contracts. BA argued it could reduce staff numbers on Worldwide and Eurofleet flights as these are not terms of individual cabin crew members' contracts. It said the new crewing levels only brought BA into line with what competitors were already providing and what the airline introduced - with the union's agreement - at Gatwick.
Judge Sir Christopher Holland ruled in BA's favour. In a statement, BA said: ‘We are extremely pleased with the High Court ruling that the modest changes we made to onboard crew numbers on flights from Heathrow were reasonable, did not breach crew contracts and can remain in place.’
