Police operation cuts Heathrow crime by 18%
16.01.12
A police operation at Heathrow has led to 100 arrests and helped reduce criminal activity across the airport's four terminals by 18 percent since October. Operation Fusion saw plain clothed and uniformed officers, including Heathrow's Intelligence Unit and UK Border Agency (UKBA) staff, deployed in and around the airport targeting wanted offenders, thieves, road traffic offenders, taxi touts and those handling stolen goods.
People have been arrested for a range of offences including immigration, drugs, public order, fraud and minor road traffic offences. Teams of officers searched incoming flights, terminal and cargo areas, went on shoplifting patrols and stopped vehicles using Automatic Number Plate Recognition to identify uninsured drivers, taxi touts and stolen cars.
Of those arrested, 37 people were charged and are subject to court proceedings. Three were cautioned, three bailed to return to Heathrow police station, one person received a Penalty Notice for Disorder and others released with no further action. Eight vehicles were also seized for offences such as no insurance or taxi touting.
