BA parent reported to have bid for BMI; Virgin interested too
15.10.11
BA parent International Airlines Group (IAG) is reported to have tabled a proposal to buy rival BMI. IAG is said to be interested in acquiring the whole airline from current owner, Lufthansa, according to Sky News. Virgin Atlantic also confirmed that it was in talks with Lufthansa yesterday over BMI.
The news service has said that discussions are in early stages. However, this is likely to enrage BA’s competitors over the dominant position it would give BA at Heathrow, especially after IAG bought six pairs of take-off and landing slots from BMI last month. IAG would own more than half of take-off and landing slots at Heathrow if it bought BMI.
Virgin Atlantic boss Steve Ridgway said earlier this week that he would like to merge his airline with BMI. It is unclear whether this would be of interest to Lufthansa, who are thought to favour a complete disposal.
