US immunity for BA / AA transatlantic alliance
14.02.10
The US Department of Transportation (DOT) says a plan by American Airlines, British Airways and other partners to more closely coordinate schedules on transatlantic flights should receive antitrust immunity. But to protect competition, the airlines must make four pairs of takeoff and landing slots available to competitors for new service between the US and Heathrow Airport.
The US Justice Department had said that allowing the venture could cause fares to rise up to 15 percent on some transatlantic routes, but the DOT disagreed and back the application. A final decision on the antitrust immunity application will follow a 60-day public comment period.
