Record passengers at Heathrow and Edinburgh airports
12.05.11
BAA’s six airports handled 9.1 million passengers last month, with Heathrow and Edinburgh recording the busiest Aprils in their history. 5.8 million passengers travelled through Heathrow last month, 31% up on the same month last year, and 776,000 through Edinburgh, 43% up. Heathrow also reported record punctuality figures in April and its highest ever April cargo tonnage (122,000).
There were also substantial rises at Stansted, Southampton, Glasgow and Aberdeen, however the percentage figures and underlying trends are distorted because of the ash crisis in April last year and the Easter holidays and royal wedding bank holiday falling in April this year.
Figures for the 12 months to April 2011 show more moderate increases at Heathrow and Edinburgh and falls in passengers at the other BAA airports. Heathrow saw 67.5m passengers, 3.9% up, and Edinburgh had 8.9m passengers, which was 2.2% up. Stansted was down 3.8% to 18.6m passengers, Southampton was down 1.5% to 1.7m, Glasgow down 3.4% to 6.7m, Aberdeen down 0.1% to 2.9m.
BAA chief executive Sir Colin Matthews said: ‘I am delighted that more passengers departed on time from Heathrow than ever before. These figures reflect the results of our £1 billion annual investment and the commitment of 77,000 staff from 320 companies who work at the airport to improve the experience of our passengers.’
