Driverless pods at work at Heathrow car park
10.08.11
Twenty-two automated pods are operating at Heathrow’s Terminal 5, replacing diesel buses that formerly drove in a loop from the airport car parks to the terminal. The electric-powered pods, which can accommodate four passengers and their bags, travel up to 25 mph along 2.4 miles of paved guideways, according to their manufacturer, ULTra PRT.
The first trials of the pods started in April, and service became fully operational earlier this month when the buses were axed. About 800 people per day use the pods, which are more convenient than the bus service as the pods come to you, rather than you waiting for them.
