BA cabin crew talks deadline extended
10.03.10
Talks between BA and the Unite union - which represents the majority of its 12,000 cabin crew - are due to resume today, after a deadline to reach agreement was extended to this lunchtime. The TUC, which has been chairing the meetings, had set the deadline 17:00 yesterday for significant progress to be made. That has now been, raising hopes that a deal is close.
BA cabin crew members have voted in favour of strike action in a dispute over pay and working conditions. The union must give a week's notice of any stoppages, but has already given assurances that members will not walk out over Easter. However, it must strike for at least an hour before March 22 in order to avoid the need for a new ballot.
A statement issued last night on behalf of both sides said: ‘It had been hoped to be able to conclude the talks today [Tuesday] but both sides have agreed that more time is needed and the negotiations will be resumed again under TUC auspices tomorrow [Wednesday].’
