BA offer former cabin crew short term contracts to cover strike
10.02.10
British Airways has approached former cabin crew released last year to entice them back on temporary contracts as strike cover if current cabin crew vote for industrial action, the Times reports today. The former staff have been offered six-month contracts worth about £1,000 a month plus £2.40 an hour flying allowance.
The newspaper reports that BA has told these former cabin crew that retraining would take a week and courses start from February 22. Unite, the union that represents about 12,000 BA cabin crew, is balloting members on possible industrial action in a dispute over changes to working practice and pay cuts, with a result expected to be announced on February 22, and the earliest strike date one week later, so the dates seem to fit exactly.
A spokesman for BA told the Times: ‘Talks with Unite continue under the auspices of the TUC and we want to reach a negotiated settlement. However, we are offering former BA cabin crew the chance to come back and fly with us in the event of Unite calling a strike. Many of the cabin crew who worked for us during 2009 on temporary contracts have made contact with us since Unite announced its second ballot. We’re pleased to be able to offer a number of them short-term contracts to help us keep flying as much as we possibly can should a strike go ahead.’
