Over a tonne of liquid tobacco seized at Heathrow
06.03.10
More than a tonne of liquid tobacco has been seized by UK Border Agency officers at Heathrow Airport. The packages of tobacco molasses, used in traditional Middle Eastern hookah pipes, were discovered in a freight consignment declared as ‘fresh papaya’ from Saudi Arabia.
The syrupy substance had to be sent for forensic tests to confirm what it was. It is believed to be the first seizure of its kind at Heathrow. If it had been declared properly around £77,000 worth of tax would have been due.
The UK Border Agency’s Heathrow Director Phillip Astle said: ‘This is a substantial and unusual haul of tobacco and an excellent detection by our officers.‘
