Iberia cancel Heathrow – Madrid flights over pilot strikes
05.01.12
Iberia has cancelled half of its flights between Heathrow and Madrid on two days next week, when its pilots are set to stage strikes. Spanish pilots’ union SEPLA has announced its members will take action on Monday (January 9) and Wednesday (January 11) in a dispute over British Airways and Iberia’s parent company International Airlines Group’s plans to create a new Spanish budget airline.
Four flights from Heathrow to Madrid will be cancelled by Iberia on both days next week, but the other four daily services are still scheduled to operate. Iberia has also cancelled up to 10 long-haul flights to and from Madrid on both strike days including services to Miami, Bogota, Lima, Sao Paolo and Buenos Aires.
IAG is planning to launch the new no-frills subsidiary later this year. Iberia’s pilots fear that they will have to accept lower salaries at the new airline, which will be called Iberia Express, as well as job losses. BA's services between the UK and Spain will operate as normal next week.
