BA / Iberia traffic up 6.1%
04.02.11
International Consolidated Airlines Group SA, the newly formed parent of British Airways and Iberia, said its traffic was up by 6.1 percent in January after last year’s heavy snowfalls were not repeated. Demand in premium cabins increased by 7.4 percent, with travel in economy up 4 percent versus pro forma figures for January 2010, IAG said in its first traffic statement since the BA-Iberia merger. However, the airlines capacity was up by 9.5 percent, meaning its load factor fell 2.3 percentage points to 73.7 percent.
While November and December saw snowfalls, January was relatively clear, which saw BA traffic up 6.4 percent. At Iberia it was up by 5.6 percent. IAG said in a statement: ‘Excluding weather impact, we believe that the premium traffic trends are broadly in line with last month. Our long-haul business remains strong, but the short-haul European market continues to be highly competitive.’
