Airline bosses say Heathrow must be expanded
03.07.09
There is no alternative to expanding Heathrow airport, the Press Association reports that airline bosses told MPs. A future Conservative government would scrap Labour plans to build a third runway at the west London airport, but easyJet and Virgin Atlantic bosses told the House of Commons Transport Committee Heathrow was full already and needed extra investment.
BA boss Willie Walsh, the head of the largest airline at Heathrow, was excused attendance at the meeting to deal with the crisis at his airline, which is in talks with its largest union over pay, working practices and staff cuts. Unfortunately he failed to attend a meeting with the union too, choosing to attend an IT conference in the South of France instead (according to the Mirror).
Strange that easyJet attended though, given that they have never flown from Heathrow. We can only guess that they see a shortage of capacity at Heathrow as a threat to their slots - and the cost of operating - at the other three main London airports.
