MSP calls for action on Glasgow flights ‘rip off’
24.06.10
A call has been made in the Scottish Parliament to stop families being ‘ripped off’ by going on holiday from Glasgow Airport. West of Scotland MSP Stewart Maxwell said it can cost £1000 more for a family of four to fly to Orlando from Glasgow than it would from London, the Evening Times reports.
Mr Maxwell said that as the journey is shorter from Glasgow there should not be a higher fare. He asked Scottish Transport Minister Stewart Stevenson what could be done to stop the practice, adding: ‘I call on all travel agents and airlines to stop ripping off people in Scotland and bring the cost of flying from Glasgow down to the same level as it costs to fly from London.’
Mr Stevenson agreed travellers from Scotland were sometimes paying over the odds for their flights and said he had met industry leaders to try and resolve the problem. A spokesman for the Association of British Travel Agents said that over the course of the year fewer passengers fly from Scotland than south England so prices have to be higher. He added: ‘If it was simply about making extra profit, another operator would come in and undercut to win passengers.’
