Scottish aviation industry push for APD cuts
14.10.11
Air Passenger Duty (APD) is a huge drag on Scottish business, costing travellers millions of pounds, the Herald reports that an alliance of airlines, travel agents and airport operators have said. The Fair Tax on Flying alliance said Scottish business travellers paid £12.4 million in APD last year and foreign business travellers flying home from Scotland £11 million.
They have described APD as a ‘stealth tax’ and a ‘tax on doing business in Scotland’, and have called for control of the tax to be devolved to Scotland, so that the Scottish parliament could reduce the tax in order to encourage flights and boost business. It was announced earlier this month that APD would be reduced on long haul flight from Northern Ireland, and aviation bosses want a similar change for Scottish flights.
