More ash cloud problems today
02.05.10
Airports in parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland closed from 07:00 today because of risks from volcanic ash, with other airports in the north of England also at risk of closure. Glasgow, Prestwick and Derry airports are likely to be closed all day, while there are plans to shut Inverness in the morning only, and Belfast in the afternoon.
The situation in the skies has been changing hour by hour, meaning the picture for air travellers is unclear. Forecasts show the 60 nautical mile buffer zone imposed around high concentrations of ash is close to some northern airports. The CAA advised passengers to check with their airline before travelling and warned the situation was changeable.
The latest closures come as a Government adviser warned yesterday that passengers could face further random disruption from volcanic ash in the coming weeks. Bill McGuire, a volcanologist and member of the Government's Cobra emergency committee, said the Eyjafjallajökull volcano could cause further problems for up to a year, even though its explosions had become less intense. He said: ‘It hasn't gone away. Previous eruptions have emerged over a year so it can carry on and on for a long time.’
