Scottish passengers warned not to bring weapons back from holiday

Scottish passengers carrying knives and offensive weapons in their luggage when they return from holiday are to be targeted in a new UK Border Agency (UKBA) campaign. The agency has launched scheme at Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Prestwick and Inverness airports, and will work with the Association of Chief Police Officers in Scotland (ACPOS), the Crown Office and the Procurator Fiscal Service.
UKBA officers set up a stand at Glasgow Airport yesterday to show passengers the types of prohibited weapons people had previously tried to bring in, including Tasers and daggers. Last year 387 offensive weapons, including 34 firearms and 111 bladed weapons, were seized from people travelling through Scotland's airports. A total of 202 of these were found at Glasgow airport.
Among the weapons confiscated by security staff last year were Samurai swords, five-bladed knuckle-dusters, flick knives, axes and taser guns which can deliver powerful electric shocks. Many of the weapons are legal in countries abroad but are banned in the UK.
The UK Border Agency have vowed to take tough action to prevent such weapons from reaching the streets. A spokesman for the UK Border Agency in Scotland said: ‘Just because you can legally buy an item while on holiday abroad does not mean you can legally bring it into Scotland. Ignorance of the law is no defence, if you are found carrying offensive weapons then you will be stopped, the weapons will be seized and you will face prosecution.'
