More ePassport gates at UK airports
29.07.11
ePassport gates have been installed at all of the terminals at Heathrow and Gatwick airports, bringing the number of automated border controls in place to 15 terminals across the UK, including all major airports.
The gates work by using facial recognition technology to compare the face of the traveller with that of the photograph stored on the chip inside their passport. Traveller details are also checked against the full range of UK Border Agency systems, just when they are seen by an officer.
ePassport gates are now installed at all major UK airports including: Birmingham Terminals 1 & 2, Bristol, Cardiff, East Midlands, Gatwick North & South, Luton, Manchester Terminals 1 & 2, Heathrow T1, T3, T4, and T5 and Stansted. More than 4.5 million people have used the gates since the first gates went live at Manchester Airport in 2008.
