Conservation group backs Gatwick’s development plans

Conservation campaigners have given a rare welcome to the latest development plans from Gatwick Airport, the Redhill Life reports. The Gatwick Airport Conservation Campaign (GACC) told the newspaper that it held a ‘constructive’ meeting with the chairman of the airport, Sir David Rowlands, and its chief executive, Stewart Wingate, last week.
The GACC said it ‘welcomed the realistic approach taken by the airport to the new aviation policy.’ Calling it ‘a sensible approach,’ the group, based in Charlwood and with about 100 borough, district and parish councils and environmental groups as members, said it backed Gatwick's policy of ‘concentrating first on improving the passenger experience and keeping out of the overheated press speculation about new runways or a new estuary airport.’
GACC, which wants a reduction in night flights, said it also welcomed the statement by the airport that they ‘will not be seeking any increase in the Government’s forthcoming consultation on the future night flights regime.’ GACC chairman Brendon Sewill added: ‘There has been a lot of speculation in the press about the need for new runways. Most of it is naive and exaggerated.’
