AOA say Lib Dem claims aviation under-taxed ‘wrong’
22.09.08
Reacting to comments from Liberal Democrat Treasury Spokesman Vince Cable that aviation is ‘under-taxed’, the Airport Operators Association (AOA) has pointed to figures that show aviation is paying significantly more in tax than it is incurring in climate change cost.
Executive Chairman of the AOA Ed Anderson said: ‘For Vince Cable to claim that aviation is under-taxed is quite simply wrong. Using the Government’s own figures for the cost of carbon, the aviation industry is already paying more in tax than it is incurring in climate cost.'
‘Mr Cable stated that on the one hand he wants to drop the idea of a carbon tax because of the impact on domestic energy bills, but on the other he wants to make aviation pay more for its carbon emissions. He cannot dance to two different tunes. At a time of high oil prices and rising living costs, piling yet more tax onto aviation makes no sense whatsoever.’
