Gatwick ‘has enough staff for Olympics’
20.01.12
Gatwick Airport's Olympic preparations were discussed when the Transport Secretary paid a visit to the hub last week. Justine Greening was told the airport will not require new staff to deal with the 25 Olympic teams and estimated 2500 athletes and coaches who will be travelling this year via Gatwick.
The airport's chief executive officer, Stewart Wingate, said that excitement was building among staff ahead of the Games. He said: ‘Obviously the athletes are the pinnacle, but we will get this overwhelming sense that this a once-in-a-lifetime event for all of us. What we've got is a lot of staff who want to be a part of the Olympics.’
Thousands of extra tourists are expected to arrive at the airport because of the Olympics too. But Mr Wingate said: ‘We will be able to deal with them with the number of staff we have got and we'll make sure the resources are in place to provide Olympic services.’
