Gatwick ‘no current plans for second runway’
16.10.11
Although Gatwick Airport expects grow to accommodate 40 million passengers a year by 2020, it can do so without the need for a second runway. Its owners said they have no current proposals for a second runway when they unveiled a new draft masterplan for the airport late last week. They said a second runway might be needed in the future, particularly if annual passenger numbers exceeded 45m, which could happen by 2030.
The draft masterplan details Gatwick's owners vision for developing the airport, creating an extra 1,700 jobs. It replaces one put forward by the airport's previous owners in 2006, and is the subject of a 12 week public consultation. Residents and passengers can have their say by visiting the consultation website.
