ABTA urges airlines to replace old fleet to achieve cost savings
07.09.08
Airlines should go to greater lengths to replace their older planes in order to cut down on fuel costs, the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) has said. The trade body said that significant savings can be made during the current financial environment by investing in newer planes.
Sean Tipton, spokesman for ABTA, said: ‘if you look at airlines like Ryanair for example, they are all saying pretty healthy things but their profits have dipped quite considerably because of massively increased fuel costs’.
'The airlines that are really being hit by the record fuel costs are those with older fleets, because older planes are much less fuel efficient, so they are going to be burning more fuel and they are (more) inefficiently manned than newer fleets.’
‘In terms of airlines going out of business, they are the ones that haven't been going for long. Zoom was a fairly new airline, it didn't give them much of a chance to build up money in the bank to get through tough times.’
‘Older airlines, particularly those who have invested in new fleets, they're not going to make any profit but it does mean it won't put them out of business.'
