MPs concern over Gatwick hotel jobs offered overseas
03.02.12
An MP has raised concerns after it was revealed that Gatwick hotel jobs are being offered to workers abroad despite rising unemployment in the area, the Argus reports. A Romanian-based website is advertising positions at three and four-star hotels in the Gatwick area, including for waiters, housekeepers, receptionists, maintenance workers, porters and chefs.
Crawley MP Henry Smith told the newspaper he is concerned that positions that could be filled locally were being advertised more than 1,000 miles away. He said: ‘There are people out there looking for jobs and it is difficult to imagine that there are not enough chefs living in Crawley or elsewhere in Sussex who would not jump at the chance of working in a good hotel. I am sure that if people could not be found in Crawley, there are others willing to travel from places like Brighton.’
Sussex Enterprise chief executive Mark Froud added that wages are not the main reason for recruiting abroad, and hotels would look elsewhere if they did not feel they could get the staff locally. He said: ‘Sometimes it is down to people being recruited for their attitude and approach to work. There are jobs out there and there are jobs available for local people, and it is up to them to really do everything they can to encourage an employer to take them on.’
