Gatwick ‘as well prepared as Oslo Airport’ for snow
01.02.11
Gatwick Airport is ‘as well prepared for heavy snow as Oslo's airport,’ it has said. Travellers will be hoping Britain does not see anywhere near as much snow as last winter, but if it does arrive, Gatwick believes they will be much better prepared.
Examples of measures taken this year include that employees have been given ‘snow socks’ to put on the wheels of their vehicles so they can get safely to and from work. The airport has also doubled its snow fleet, meaning it can clear as much snow as the airport in Oslo, one of Europe's snowiest cities.
Gatwick chief executive officer Stewart Wingate said snow could still cause disruption but ‘We are convinced we will be faster at clearing the runways.’ He added he had been liasing with the Highways Agency to ensure clearing the M23 was a priority in the case of snow too.
