Exeter Airport bosses say the number of flights and passengers could fall next year, the Echo reports. But while this is expected to be a ‘year of consolidation’, the airport insists it will not be losing any routes and that it is in a ‘strong position’.
Airport spokesman Stephen Ayres insisted Exeter will weather difficult economic conditions. He said passenger numbers at the airport from January to July were up 3% on the same period last year, and the airport is predicting figures from August to December will be equal to those from 2007.
He said: ‘We see 2008 and 2009 as years of consolidation. I would say we are not looking for substantial growth, but we will either be on par with 2007 levels or see a few capacity cuts. If we do see capacity cuts, it will only be with Flybe.’
‘We are in a strong position compared to the rest of the UK. Exeter is quite rural, and domestic links are in high demand here, as well as routes to the Isles of Scilly, the Channel Islands and France. I think travelling by air is now cheaper in many cases than driving. We don't expect huge cuts in service, and if there are any cuts, these will be in the number of flights. We don't expect any routes to be axed.'
