Noise warning as Edinburgh Airport runway work starts
29.03.08
Work to resurface Edinburgh Airport's main runway will start tomorrow. The £16 million, eight-month project will see its main runway closed between 23:00 and 05:45, with flights diverted on to the secondary runway. The runway was last resurfaced in 1991.
Residents in parts of south and west Edinburgh, Midlothian and West Lothian have been reminded that they may see or hear aircraft close to their homes during these times. Around 18 aircraft – mostly cargo and mail flights – use the airport between 23:00 and 06:00 on an average night.
Edinburgh Airport managing director David Johnston said: ‘The resurfacing is an extremely important project that will renew the life of the runway for a further 10 years, and is essential to ensure the continued success of Edinburgh Airport, now Scotland's busiest airport.'
‘We have made every effort to minimise the impact on local communities. However, because our secondary runway will be operational during the works, residents living under the flight path may experience some disruption.'
‘If people do have concerns, they can call our freephone noise hotline. We will investigate their call and fine the aircraft if it is found to have broken the night- time noise threshold. The hotline number is 0800 731 3397.'
