BAA to run buses to beat Edinburgh transport strike
18.07.05
BAA has announced its plans to run an Edinburgh airport to city centre bus service the strikes planned by Lothian Buses staff later this month in a pay dispute.
The walk-outs by more than 1400 drivers employed by the council-owned company will bring the Capital's public transport network to a halt today, and over the weekend of July 30 and 31. An overtime ban to be brought in from tomorrow will mean services will run on a Saturday timetable for the rest of week following the one-day strike.
The Airlink service providing transport to and from the city centre from Edinburgh Airport will also be suspended, but is to be replaced by a private coach service laid on by BAA. A spokeswoman for Edinburgh Airport said the frequency of the city centre to airport service would not change.
Council officials are planning for a huge in increase of cars on the road during the strikes, causing traffic chaos across the city. Pay-and-display parking charges in the peripheral parking zone - outside of the core of the city centre - will be lifted for Monday's strike. Single yellow line restrictions will also be removed, except on junctions and corners.
