Edinburgh Airport closed by suspect package
19.03.11
Edinburgh Airport was closed yesterday due to a suspect package, which turned out to be a false alarm. A security alert on the airport's website had indicated that it had closed at around 11:30 and expected to be shut until 1500 GMT due to the incident which also resulted in the closure of roads to the airport.
Passengers were taken out of the terminal as the emergency services and bomb disposal team moved in. However, once the army bomb squad had investigated the package they allowed the terminal to be reopen around 45 minutes later, saying it was a false alarm.
A spokesman for the airport said that the incident had not caused much disruption, with just 13 flights delayed. Some planes were still allowed to land during the terminal closure, and operations were quickly back to normal.
