Aer Lingus ‘considering Scottish base’
14.08.08
Aer Lingus is considering Glasgow or Edinburgh Airport for future expansion after opening its first base outside Ireland only last year, the Scotsman reports. Enda Corneille, the airline's corporate affairs director, said the airports were contenders for one of three new UK ‘aircraft bases’ it planned.
Mr Corneille said the bases would follow the Belfast ‘template’ (its first base outside Ireland), where three aircraft serve ten European routes. However, he gave no timescale and said the move depended on acquiring new short-haul aircraft.
A Scottish base would face competition from Irish rival Ryanair, which has a major base at Prestwick and is expanding at Edinburgh. However, Aer Lingus already carries 200,000 passengers a year on its daily flights between Edinburgh and Glasgow and Dublin, and so is an established brand in Scotland.
