Edinburgh Airport passengers down 3.3 percent

Passenger numbers at Edinburgh Airport were down 3.3 percent in March (to 671,500) compared to last year, new figures have revealed. This included a total of 151,000 people passing through the airport over the Easter long weekend, down 1.3 percent on a year earlier, with bad weather, strikes by British Airways staff and the early Easter all reported to have contributed to the decline. The fall in March compares to 3.5 percent growth in February.
Airport operator BAA said the seven days of walkouts, which forced the cancellation of dozens of Scotland - London flights, had reduced passengers by up to 2 percent – or 27,500. The firm said the collapse of Scottish holiday airline Flyglobespan in December had also had a major impact at Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen airports, which had still not replaced all of the lost capacity.
Gordon Dewar, managing director at Edinburgh Airport, said: ‘Although traffic was down slightly last month, Edinburgh still outperformed other airports, further underlining the continued appeal of the Capital.’ Rival Glasgow saw its passenger total plunge by 9.6 percent last month.
In the year to the end of Match passengers were up 1.6% (9.0m) at Edinburgh, whereas at Glasgow traffic shrank by 10.3 percent to less than 7.1 million – almost down to the levels of ten years ago. The fall puts Edinburgh Airport nearly two million passengers a year ahead of its west coast rival.
