Edinburgh Airport ask passengers to ‘pack properly and dress cleverly’
09.07.11
Edinburgh Airport has launched a campaign to speed up security. The airport's managers want passengers to be prepared when they arrive for their flights by ‘packing properly and dressing cleverly’. The message will be on billboards and bus shelters across Edinburgh. About 10,000 postcards are also being distributed across the city and a further 16,500 postcards are to be given out at the airport.
Last year, 21.7 tonnes of items that were taken off of passengers before and during going through security. To dispose of or recycle these items cost £15,000. Problems with liquids in bags also slow down the security process, making it slower for everyone.
The airport is therefore reminding passengers that any liquids that are being taken in hand baggage need to be in containers of 100ml or less (not 100ml or less in a bigger container) and inside a small plastic see-through bag. Passengers may be asked to take off their coats, belts or shoes and laptops need to be taken out of their bag before going through the scanner.
Kevin Brown, managing director of Edinburgh Airport, said: ‘This campaign asks our passengers to help us help them by coming to the airport prepared for security. Please take a minute to think when packing, check our website for all of the guidelines and information you need and help us make the airport experience the best it can be.'
'It not only will make for an easier and quicker passage through security, it will reduce the amount of waste we gather and dispose of. Last year we disposed of 21.7 tonnes of discarded items – the weight of an average fighter jet.'
More information on the security process at the airport can be found on their website.
