easyJet back Edinburgh Airport drop off charge
07.08.10
easyJet said it ‘didn't ask’ for a drop-off charge at Edinburgh Airport, but seemed to confirm it backs the plans with its statements about the fee. Fellow budget airline Ryanair also backs the charge, calling the current drop off area a car park..
Airport operator BAA characterised a wave of criticism after announcing plans to introduce a £1 fee in the autumn for those dropping off passengers at the terminal. A free area will be maintained near the Hilton hotel, with a shuttle bus to the terminal.
Visiting Edinburgh to announce two new routes (see separate story), easyJet's regional general manager Paul Simmons said: ‘The drop-off charge is not something we asked for, but we understand why they're doing it. The current drop-off area is not really fit for purpose at the moment.'
‘A drop-off charge was brought in at Luton Airport over a year ago and the reaction from the customers has been negligible.’ Interestingly, when Luton announced the drop off charge, the airline was very much against it!
