Crackdown on East Midlands Airport taxis

Over 100 taxis and minicabs serving East Midlands Airport were checked by vehicle examiners to make sure they are roadworthy in a crackdown this week. A spokesman said the aim of the operation was to reduce the number of unlicensed taxis at the airport.
The Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA) carried out the operation together with 14 local authorities from across the East Midlands. During the one-day crackdown on Tuesday, three drivers were ordered not to use their vehicles for private hire until faults such as defective brakes and worn tyres were repaired.
Four drivers were told to fix faults, such as excessively tinted windows and on five occasions, drivers were not displaying their licences. One driver was reported for summons for driving without a licence or insurance.
Sgt Stephen Smith, from Leicestershire Police, said: 'Our main priority is to keep the public safe when getting a taxi to and from the airport. Passengers should be able to get into a taxi knowing that it is roadworthy and driven by someone who has a licence otherwise there could be problems with insurance claims should they be involved in an accident.'
