Passengers and profits down at East Midlands Airport
22.08.11
Passenger figures and profits dropped at East Midlands Airport in the last year as the recession and ash cloud hit air travel. The airport had 400,000 fewer passengers in the year to April 2011, with 4.1 million people passing through the regional hub. Its profits dropped by £2.6m to £7.1m in the period, with the airport loosing about £600,000 in revenue as a result of cancellations caused by the ash cloud in April 2010.
The airport said in its annual report: ‘The worldwide aviation industry has experienced a challenging year, significantly impacted by reduced passenger volumes across all markets with further reductions as a result of the volcanic ash cloud experienced earlier in the year.'
Passenger numbers have increased slightly in the early part of 2011.
