Narrow escape for East Midlands parcel bomb
18.12.10
Bomb disposal officers had a narrow escape after nearly loading the al-Qaeda ink cartridge bomb discovered at East Midlands Airport in to a van and transporting it by road to a laboratory in Kent, it has been reported.
Police are reported to have nearly put the device in a van to be transported for further examinations because it was so sophisticated they did not realise it was explosive. It was to be taken to the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory at Fort Halstead in Kent while it was still primed. Officers would have been on their way there when it was timed to explode.
A police source told a newspaper that officers unwittingly disarmed it and were only alerted later by officials that it was viable and could have taken down a plane.
