Wizz axe Durham Tees Valley flights
30.08.08
Wizz Air, which launched flights between Durham Tees Valley Airport and Poland last year, is to ground the service because fewer migrant workers are travelling to Britain.
The Polish budget airline introduced three flights a week between the North East airport and Warsaw last summer - the only link from the region to the Polish capital - because of the growing number of foreign workers employed in the region. However, the route will be discontinued in two weeks’ time when the summer programme comes to an end.
A spokesman for Durham Tees Valley Airport said: ‘Obviously, we are disappointed that Wizz Air has taken the decision to withdraw its service to Warsaw. But, as the airline has made clear, this is just part of the measures it is having to take in light of the current economic situation, the extremely high fuel prices and the fact there has been a marked reduction generally in the number of Polish people travelling to the UK in order to gain employment.’
