MP questions security at Durham Tees Valley Airport
11.07.07
A North East MP has suggested that Durham Tees Valley Airport is an appealing target for terrorists and questioned whether security was tight enough at the airport, given its proximity to the army's Catterick garrison.
Durham Tees Valley is the closest airport to Catterick in North Yorkshire - home to one of the UK's largest army bases. Ashok Kumar, the Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland MP, said the airport is used by soldiers boarding military flights to the Middle East, making it an 'appealing target' for terrorists.
Speaking during parliamentary debate an airport security yesterday, Mr Kumar said: 'The question arises as to whether the level of security at the airport is sufficient for its military use. This is particularly pertinent given that it increases the airport's appeal as a target for terrorist attacks. The recent events in Glasgow show that such an eventuality must be considered.'
Responding to Mr Kumar, Transport Minister Jim Fitzpatrick said he was confident the Ministry of Defence had discussed the issues with Durham Tees Valley management. He added that civilian airport security is a matter for local police forces. Durham Police said airport security measures were 'constantly reviewed'.
