Giant plane at Durham Tees Valley Airport
09.12.08
A giant of the skies touched down at Durham Tees Valley Airport yesterday. The Antonov airliner arrived bearing a load of three Army helicopters. The 226 feet 3 inches long Russian freight plane arrived from Athens, Greece, with its cargo believed to be destined for a nearby airbase.
A spokesman for the airport said: ‘Some people were surprised to see it - its one of the biggest in the world. But this is a great example of what Durham Tees Valley can handle. Although we are a small regional airport, this demonstrates perfectly the airports capabilities.’
The Antonov An-124 is one of the biggest aircraft in the world. The aircraft is capable of flying up to 9,320 miles in one trip and can carry loads up to 150 tonnes. With its cargo delivered, the aircraft left the airport in the afternoon.
