Job cuts at Derry Airport
07.01.09
Staff cuts on on the way at Derry Airport, the chief executive of Derry City Council said. The council, which owns and operates the airport, wants to save about £600,000. It currently costs more than £4m per year to run and it is estimated the airport generates approximately £40m for the local economy.
Valerie Watts said she was confident there would be no compulsory redundancies. A recruitment freeze is already in place and Paddy Casey, spokesman for the trade union Nipsa, said 45 people were employed by the airport and about 10 jobs were at risk. A reduction in shift patterns, redeployment within the council, early retirement and voluntary severance are also being considered.
A new airport manager has been appointed to oversee the changes. Proposals for increased commercial activity and improved income include the appointment of Albert Harrison OBE as airport manager for a six-month period to support management in achieving targets within the business plan. He takes up his post in the middle of this month.
Mr Harrison has extensive aviation and commercial experience from Cardiff and Belfast airports. Prior to this appointment he was airport director at Belfast City Airport. He also worked at Cathay Pacific Airways.
