25.11.06
A plane had to make an emergency landing at Cardiff Airport yesterday after it was struck by lightning. The Air South West flight, carrying 48 passengers, had just taken off from the airport at 18:45 when it was hit. The plane's captain turned around the flight, which had been heading for Manchester, and made an emergency landing at 19:20.
The lightning, which struck shortly after takeoff, is thought to have affected instruments in the plane's undercarriage, possibly the nose wheel. Fire fighters were called to the scene as a precautionary measure.
The plane was being examined to find the cause of the problems last nithg, a spokesman said. Passengers were given the option of either recieving a refund on their tickets or being taken by bus to Manchester.
