Two men have been jailed for a total of 18 years after being caught smuggling cocaine into Britain via Bristol Airport. Bristol Crown Court heard this week how the two men were arrested in separate incidents after each trying to carry 2.5 kilos of the 'devastating' drug into the UK.
Londoner Delroy Gayle, aged 48, was caught on June 2, with drugs worth £120,000 hidden in a false-bottomed suitcase. He was flying into the UK from Cameroon, via Paris, and claimed to have attended an overseas funeral. A jury found him guilty of being knowingly concerned in the importation of cocaine.
Separately, on June 25, Nigerian Okechukwu Okoye, aged 43, was intercepted by UK Border Agency detection officers after flying into the UK from Paris. X-rays had shown hidden compartments in his suitcase - a search revealed drugs valued at £100,000. He pleaded guilty to the same offence.
Gayle was jailed for 11 years, and Okoye sentenced to 7 years.
