Campaigners dispute Bristol Airport jobs figures
29.07.09
Campaign group Stop Bristol Airport Expansion (SBAE) say the proposed expansion at Bristol Airport would only result in half the number of new jobs the airport has predicted. SBAE said the airport could reliably claim that around 900 direct new jobs would be created by its expansion, but there is insufficient evidence for the remaining 2600 publicised.
The group said today that Bristol Airport is pushing its plans on the basis of largely unsubstantiated jobs figures at the expense of communities and the environment. They also claim that the airport's evidence included jobs and income from a proposed airport hotel that is not part of its planning application.
SBAE spokesperson Hilary Burn said: ‘Although there will be some new jobs for the region, the considerable damage to communities, environment and the wider global environment far outweighs the benefits of a relatively insignificant number of jobs. The expansion is all about short term gains over long term destruction.'
‘The mitigation measures offered by the airport are completely inadequate to counteract millions more cars on North Somerset's roads, increased disturbance to local people from aircraft noise, and a more than doubling of CO2 emissions from the airport's flights.’
