Bristol Airport parking amongst the UK’s most expensive
22.02.10
Passengers flying from Bristol Airport for a weekend away have to pay some of the highest prices in the country for car parking. Those pre-booking a three-day space in its long-stay car park pay £33, which is second only to Luton Airport (£38) in a league table of the major terminals. The same stay at Gatwick costs £18 and at Heathrow it is £29. Birmingham charges £23 and Liverpool £29 for three days.
If travellers choose to pay on the day they travel, they pay £11 more at Bristol than if they pre-book, at £44. This is the fifth highest of the 13 main airports in England, according to travelsupermarket. For 15-day stays in the long-stay car park, Bristol compares more favourably, however. At £112 on the day, its prices are the ninth highest, and the pre-booked cost of £65 is middle-of-the table, in seventh.
The main reason for the high cost of Bristol Airport car parking appears to be the lack of alternatives. The local council blocks any attempt by off airport car park operators to set up in competition to the airport, allowing it a virtual monopoly. For short stays passengers typically want the convenience of parking at the airport, and the lack of alternatives allows the airport to charge high prices compared even to much bigger rivals. For longer stays passengers will look at alternatives - such as bus, taxi or friends and family - which drives down the cost of parking.
